Rice Planting 9/6/2009

September 6th, 2009

Dear friends,

In Northern Thailand, this is the season for growing rice. This fall we’ve helped our family homes to rent and plant about 6 acres of rice-paddy. If God blesses the harvest, we may reap enough rice to feed all the families for a full year, and perhaps have some extra to sell or trade. This week we’ll share some pictures of the work. Pray that God, the Lord of our harvest, will send us enough rain and sun to produce a bountiful crop.

Grace and peace to you,

Dave & Shirley Callahan

One of the many steps to grow rice is to pull up and re-plant the green shoots into a flooded rice-paddy.

Here the children and parents are working to push the new rice shoots into the flooded paddy near our rented homes.

A closer look shows how they have pulled up small bundles of the rice shoots and floated them in the paddy

while they push the individual shoots into well-spaced rows. All the work is done in the soft mud of a flooded paddy.

Some of the smaller boys helped by hunting & catching the land-crabs that will destroy young rice shoots.

This is muddy-and-wet fun for small boys…but it’s also very important and useful work to protect the new rice.

On planting day, a late afternoon shower was coming over the mountains signaling the end of a long days work.
