Mae Chaem 8-24-2009

August 23rd, 2009

Hello dear friends,

This week we traveled over the highest mountain in Thailand to visit a Christian hill tribe hostel that we help in the small town of Mae Chaem. They have 26 poor hill tribe children living in cramped quarters while they attend local schools. During our visit we helped them buy some much-needed kitchen/cooking utensils. They needed the new items to help them prepare food for about 30 people at every meal. It had rained hard for several days prior to our trip, but God gave us a good day of safe travel. A few nights after we returned to Chiang Mai, there was a bad traffic accident in front of our office/home. One of the cars involved smashed into our large rolling gate. A couple young people were injured and one is hospitalized with a serious head injury.

Pray that God will protect us during our travels in this country where crazy drivers and wild traffic are the norm.

Pray that God will draw all the children we support into genuine, life-changing faith.

Grace & peace to you,

Dave & Shirley Callahan

This is the main street in the small town of Mae Chaem; lined with shops and motorcycles, and stray dogs.

At a hardware shop, we bought a large aluminum wok (foreground) and some bowls, plates, and spoons, etc.

The shopkeeper is wearing a cloth mask—that’s very common here because people fear the swine flu outbreak.

At the Christian Hostel, some of the older children and the house parents pose with their new supplies.

In the back row are Prateeb the house father at left, and his wife Nit, is in pink next to Shirley.

Nit was expecting a new baby the very day of our visit.

Back home in Chiang Mai, a small car and pickup truck crashed in front of our office yesterday evening.

The car finally smashed into and knocked down our fence/gate before stopping. An injured boy is on the ground

behind the car and lamp post.
