Growing Mushrooms 9/28/2008
September 28th, 2008Hello again from Northern Thailand!
This week our orphan homes started another small project to help provide food for the children. Each family built a small bamboo & straw enclosure for growing mushrooms. Thai people love them added into their rice & vegetable dishes. We helped each home purchase supplies to build the small “mushroom house” and we bought the mushroom packs to place inside the dark & humid space. At Home of Comfort yesterday, we saw the children gather a first batch to include in their meal.
Pray that the homes harvest lots of mushrooms before the weather becomes too dry in November.
Pray that the terrible banking/credit problems do not cause many supporters to stop providing funds for the orphan homes.
In His Grace,
David & Shirley Callahan
Here Prajuab cleared space and is laying out support poles for the mushroom house behind Home of Comfort.
House parents Oranee, Daniel, and Prajuab all worked in the heat & humidity to build a space for growing mushrooms.
Young Nathan finished the project by sweeping out the darkened room. The mushroom starts are stacked inside.
These bags contain the mushroom starts. They are kept damp in the dark hut and edible mushrooms sprout as shown here.
Children love puppies. The boys have named this little guy “Super Hero”.
The homes are also raising chickens for food. These are some of the colorful birds!
