Hello dear friends,
Oswald Chambers, author of My Utmost for His Highest, taught that a missionary life is one of, “preparation, and preparation, and more preparation…” Meaning there must be a lifelong process of spiritual growth and service to God that evolves as His Holy Spirit directs us in each new step of faith. So, we’re always expecting God to open our hearts & minds, and teach us new or better ways to reach and rescue the children in our ministry. Most of the time, changes come in small steps…slight adjustments or minor improvements.
Here’s an example: The house father at Home of Light tried to give the boys a haircut using only a pair of scissors. Little James (wearing the tape) got nicked. So, our new rule is “take them to the barber…it’s safer”. “he [God] will teach the ways that are right and best to those who humbly turn to him.” (Psalm 25:9)
Another example of “continuous improvement” is our project to raise fish in several large ponds. We’ve learned to let the ponds become overgrown with water-plants. At first we tried to keep the ponds clear & beautiful, but robbers came at night and used nets to steal all the fish. Now thieves cannot use nets, and the fish are safe to grow & thrive. “Teach me, Lord, what you want me to do, and I will obey you faithfully…” (Psalm 86:11)
Be flexible: We’ve learned to adjust our plans for large projects, and allow plenty of time for individual family homes to tend their own gardens and small-scale projects. The new family at Home of Light has already cleared & planted a space behind their rented house. “you are to plant and harvest crops on your land.” (Exodus 23:10)
Don’t hold our opinions too dear: We felt that western-style beds were the best sleeping arrangement for our family homes. However, we’ve learned to accept that, in this culture, some folks prefer a mattress on the floor near a window. “I will lie down in peace and sleep, for though I am alone, O Lord, you will keep me safe.” (Psalms 4:8)
There is one big change for all of our staff & family house parents. We’ve begun a program of planned & personal “spiritual growth” for each person. All of us committed to pray for a week, asking God to identify 1 or 2 areas where we need to grow in godly character. An example would be to put away anger, and become more peaceful in our spirit. Each of us now has a personal, specific, and intentional 6-month plan. And, we each have found a trusted partner to encourage us and support our progress. “grow in spiritual strength and become better acquainted with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Pet 3:18)
Meanwhile, we’re dealing with major changes in the life of Benjamin, and his family. Please remember to pray for him, and pray for God to provide us all we need to cover the cost of his care.
House Father Tom, and Benjamin’s brothers from Home of Grace, praying for him. “O Jehovah, God of the heavenly armies, hear my prayer!” (Psalm 84:8)
Peace be to all of you who are in Christ,
Dave & Shirley Callahan
